Architectural Shingles vs. 3-Tab Shingles: Which Is Better & Why?

In today’s day and age, there are so many asphalt shingle options available on the market. They come in a variety of textures, colors, shapes and styles. However, when it comes to architectural shingles versus 3-Tab shingles – which is the better option?

Roof Aesthetics – 3-Tab shingles are flat. They are uniform in shape, and they only have a single tab shape and size. This gives a very monotonous look. Architectural shingles, on the other hand, are extremely dimensional in appearance. Multiple layers of material are added to the base, and can even be formulated to look like slate or cedar shakes! This does wonders for boosting a home’s curb appeal.

Physical Characteristics – Architectural shingles are roughly 50% heavier than their 3-Tab counterpart. This allows the architectural shingle to be a sturdier and more durable roofing material. 3-Tab shingles also lack the amount of granules that are added to their top surface, making them inferior in quality.

Ratings for Wind – 3-Tab shingles are wind rated for approximately 60 mph wind gusts. If you’re a Floridian, you know that 60 mph winds can happen during something as simple as a tropical storm! Architectural shingles are typical rated for winds between 80 and 120 mph wind gusts – lasting much longer in severe weather.

Lifespan – Architectural shingles boast a significantly longer lifespan. They can last between 18 to 20 years, and sometimes even up to 30 years under good weather conditions. 3-Tab shingles may only last about 7 to 10 years.
